Time to talk take action on climate change

Two of the major environmental crises...

TreeTime’s mission is two-pronged; to reduce atmospheric carbon levels and prevent further increase in global temperatures due to anthropogenic climate change, and to promote and restore the flora and fauna unique to New Zealand. These are well-established environmental goals that are beneficial to all living species in this country and on this planet.


While both of the above issues are of paramount importance, TreeTime recognises that reducing and mitigating carbon emissions to stem the increase in global temperatures is a priority. The sooner we can adequately tackle this issue, the greater chance we have of being successful. However, it is possible to simultaneously work to achieving both of these outcomes. This reality is reflected in our planting plan, detailed below.

The implications of the former on the future of humanity is trite, with an increase in global temperatures causing sea level rise and rendering previously liveable places uninhabitable due to extreme heat. Further, warmer temperatures compound upon itself the further it is allowed to accelerate; wildfires are an example of the phenomenon, which release millions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere and increase temperatures further, causing more wildfires.


In New Zealand over 75 animal and plant species have become extinct since humans arrived in New Zealand. Further, when humans arrived, native New Zealand forest covered more than 80% of the land.  Only 25% of New Zealand is now covered in native forest. New Zealand native forests are a critical part of our cultural identity, being home to a vast array of indigenous flora and fauna.

The Problem

Atmospheric Carbon has skyrocketed to 420 parts per million. Increased CO2 leads to higher global temperatures and extreme weather events.

The Consequences

If humans do not drastically reduce CO2 levels, we face increased flooding, wildfires and possibly an extinction event.

The Solution

Tree planting is one of the most efficient methods of capturing carbon.

By planting exotic trees we can capture carbon at a rate 5x faster than native trees over the first 30 years.


Our chosen exotic, the Knobcone-Monterey Cross, has been recommended by the NZ Government.

Fit For Purpose

Exotic trees have a life span of around 150 years, after which time they will be naturally replaced by native forest.


Our exotics do not spread their seed, and promote low to medium levels of biodiversity and soil control.

To restore native wildlife, we must plant native trees.

Improve Biodiversity

Silver Beech


Native trees promote indigenous flora and fauna, such as birdlife, insects, ferns and flowering plants.

Interplanting Benefits

Natives trees are ordinarily slow-growing and difficult/expensive to establish. However, the exotic species acts as a nurse, and aids growth.

Full Native Forest

In 150-200 years, we expect our forests will convert to 100% native forest and bush, living for thousands of years.
